Family connection is something all of us want more of. Yet the way we try to create it can sometimes work against us.
Planned “family time” can feel forced.
Busy schedules leave little room for spontaneity.
Screens and different interests pull everyone in separate directions.
When connection feels like an obligation, it leads to resistance rather than closeness.
Research suggests a different approach works better.
Unstructured, voluntary play releases oxytocin and dopamine chemicals linked to trust, empathy, and emotional bonding. In other words, connection grows more naturally when the moment isn’t overplanned.
Instead of organising the perfect activity, you can create a simple weekly window for low-pressure, child-led play. Building something together or even doing separate activities side by side.
No strict agenda. No forced fun.
This week, we’re exploring how your family can build stronger bonds through play that feels natural and genuinely shared. Let's dive in!
The Better Us Project
Family play works because it creates shared experience and real connection. But the moment children leave home and step into school, those same connection habits disappear into busy pressure and routine.
The Better Us Project brings that spirit of play and connection into the classroom.
Instead of treating well-being as another lesson, students go on shared adventures where small acts of kindness power the journey forward. It works for the same reason family play works: immediate feedback, visible progress, and meaningful participation.
Students feel ownership.
Teachers gain real-time well-being insights.
And kindness becomes something the whole school can see growing every day.
A culture where connection doesn’t just happen at home, but continues into the classroom.

Walk, Stop, Name, Clap, Jump, Dance
One reason family time is difficult, especially with teens, is that forced bonding feels uncomfortable. When activities require emotional sharing right away, some family members shut down or avoid joining altogether.
The key is to start with light, powerful icebreakers.
Walk, Stop, Name, Clap, Jump, Dance is an energetic and silly reaction game that removes pressure and replaces it with laughter. There’s no deep conversation required, no awkward vulnerability, just movement and quick thinking that naturally loosens everyone up.
How to play:
Two players face off while another family member calls the commands. Start simple: Walk = walk and Stop = stop. Then the fun begins! As the levels increase, commands swap meanings, which creates hilarious confusion:
- Walk now means Stop
- Stop now means Walk
- Clap and Name are added
- Later levels introduce Jump and Dance, sometimes reversed
Try it with 1v1 rounds, with the winner staying on to face the next challenger until everyone has played. Mistakes usually lead to laughter, and that’s the goal!
Simple rewards at home can be choosing the family movie, picking a dessert, controlling the car playlist, or deciding on the next weekend activity.

Empower Your Family With Calm, Clarity & Connection
We, parents, want to “do play right.” But trying too hard can feel performative, and children are quick to sense when something isn’t authentic.
Empower Your Family With Calm, Clarity & Connection focuses on real connection, not perfect performance. It helps parents build confidence in creating supportive home environments.
You’ll explore practical strategies to:
- Stay calm during routine changes
- Support motivation at home
- Build confidence and security in your child
- Strengthen genuine connections without forcing activities
This is for parents who want a connection that feels natural, not scripted.
When families feel calm and connected, play starts becoming a shared experience.

Student Leaders, Big Impact
We had the privilege of delivering a keynote at the Student Leaders Congress in Warrnambool. 300 student leaders gathered with energy and a shared commitment to creating positive change in their schools and communities.
The day was filled with laughter, reflection, meaningful conversations, and playful moments that brought the learning to life.
It was inspiring to see such openness and enthusiasm from the next generation of leaders. The future is in very good hands.
A special thank you to Jess Perry Creations for capturing the highlights and helping share the magic of the day.
Moments like these remind us why this work matters.
