Meet the founder

Hi, I'm Dale.

In 2010 I was a PE teacher in London and couldn't shake the feeling that we were teaching children everything except how to be well. That's where the idea started. A free app called ClassBreak, then a curriculum, then a global ecosystem. The single belief underneath all of it: five minutes of play, done well, changes the rest of the day.

Our story

From a London classroom to a global play ecosystem.

The School of Play didn't start as The School of Play. It started in 2012 as a free app called ClassBreak, and grew, year by year.

Pre-2012
A teacher, a trainer, an idea
Dale Sidebottom worked as a primary and high school teacher and personal trainer. Across both worlds he kept seeing the same thing, when people played, they showed up better.
2012
ClassBreak is born
After landing in London as a supply teacher, Dale built a collection of equipment-free games to win the first five minutes of any class. Featured in the Shepparton News, ClassBreak launched as a free iOS app, the very first School of Play product.
2016
Energetic Education is founded
Dale starts Energetic Education, bringing movement-based learning, brain breaks and play into schools as a structured offering for the first time.
2018
ClassBreak goes whole-school
ClassBreak crosses 500+ games and is picked up by whole schools across Australia, the UK and the US. Dale leaves the classroom to commit to play-based wellbeing full time.
2019
Jugar Life launches
Jugar Life takes play-based wellbeing beyond the classroom, into corporates, families and communities.
2020–2023
TEDx, books, podcast, 25 countries
Dale tours the world as a TEDx speaker on play, authors All Work No Play, launches the Energetic Radio podcast and runs programmes across 25+ countries.
2024
The School of Play is formed
Paul Campbell joins as Director. ClassBreak, Energetic Education, Jugar Life and the wider work are united under one global brand: The School of Play.
2025
A connected ecosystem
ClassBreak relaunches on the web with 1,000+ games and 134 courses. The School of Play app, Better Us Project, The Academy and the Play Free Foundation now serve 100,000+ teachers and counting.

Our origin

It started in a classroom.

One five-minute idea, twelve years of iteration, twenty-five countries, same north star: helping people build happier, healthier and more connected lives through play.

The School of Play story

It started as a teacher with five spare minutes. It turned into a curriculum, a platform, and a global movement.
